Forum of Augustus and Forum of Caesar

Tuesday, August 3rd 2021, 07.30 pm

An English speaking guide will introduce the Imperial Rome while walking between the Imperial fora.  Afterwards, participants will enter the amazing fora of Augustus and Caesar.

Forum of Augustus

While spacing on various aspects of the Roman world, the story is still anchored to the site of Augustus, creatively using the remains of the Forum to try to let the stones “speak” for themselves. Besides the faithful reconstruction of the area, with special effects of all kinds, the story focuses on the figure of Augustus, whose giant statue, over 12 meters high, dominated the area next to the temple. The spectators will be accompanied by the voice of Piero Angela and by some amazing videos and reconstructions that show places as they looked like at the time of Augustus: a thrilling representation which combines historical and scientific rigour with entertainment.

Forum of Caesar

The visit seeks to evoke the role of the Forum in the life of the Romans but also the figure of Julius Caesar. To accomplish this great work, Caesar had to expropriate and demolish an entire neighbourhood. Caesar also wanted that the new headquarters of the Roman Senate, the Curia, was built right next to his court. A building that still exists and that, through a virtual reconstruction, you can review as it appeared at that time. The story narrated by Piero Angela, accompanied by reconstructions and videos, starts from the history of the excavations made for the construction of Via dei Fori Imperiali, when an “army” of 1,500 construction workers were mobilized in an unprecedented work: razing to the ground an entire neighbourhood and digging out the area until the level of ancient Rome was reached.

Exhibition At Terme Di Caracalla

Thursday, August 5th 2021, 06.00 pm

The exhibition will be communicated as soon as the official calendar of the 2021 Season will be announced by the Terme di Caracalla.

About the Terme di Caracalla: The Termae Anthoninianae, also known as the Baths of Caracalla, are some of the best preserved imperial building of the ancient times. They were built in the southern part of Rome, under emperor Caracalla, and were finished in 216 A.D. They exhibit the rectangular plan typical of Imperial spa centres and was not simply a place for bathing, sport and health, but it was also a place of study and for relaxing. Entrance to the heart of the building was by one of four porticos on the north-east face. Around the centre of the structure the various parts of the spa are found in sequential order: the “Calidarium”, the “Tepidarium”, the “Frigidarium” and the “Natatio”. There are also other zones and areas to be found around the two gymnasiums. The spa of Caracalla is one of those rare ancient examples in which, albeit only in part, it is possible to reconstruct something of the internal decoration. Written manuscripts refer to enormousmarble columns, flooring made of coloured marble, mosaics of glass and marble on the walls, painted stuccos and hundreds of statues located in niches and placed centrally in the rooms themselves. The water system was made possible by the construction of a special duct from the main aqueduct called the Aqua Antoniana. Throughout its history the spa was reconstructed several times and before finally closing altogether in 537 A.D.
